Energy Efficiency

	Energy sector plays a vital role for the economic development, particularly the manufacturing sector. In today’s changing scenario, the continuous price hike in petroleum and the big gap in demand and supply of electricity in Pakistan, it has become imperative to look for alternate energy resources to ensure economic, effective and un-interruptive power supply to the manufacturing units to enhance productivity. National Productivity Organization (NPO) believes to attain maximum efficiency in proper utilization of existing energy with the help of suitable energy saving measures in the SME sector that contributes a major portion towards economic growth. NPO has taken an initiative in December 2005 and signed the agreement with GTZ to launch energy audits in textile sector under Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency framework to enhance productivity and quality. In this regard, energy audit was conducted in six units under the supervision of German experts. The results of energy audit conducted in six pilot projects (two each at Lahore, Faisalabad and Karachi) of textile sector (spinning & processing) selected with the assistance and cooperation of APTMA, are shown below. A generic report of best practices for energy efficiency in spinning and processing sectors has also been disseminated.

In view of the encouraging results of the energy audits in six pilot projects, the NPO has sought government funding through PC-1 to enlarge its scope to cope with energy deficiencies. It aims to improve the competitiveness of textile sector on a sustainable basis by significantly reducing the cost of energy. At the same time, the NPO has utilized the services of an International Expert, Mr. Pawan Kumar from India, who was appointed for two weeks (August 3-17, 2007) by the Asian Productivity Organization (APO), Japan, under its Technical Expert Services (TES) Program, on Energy Efficiency. As part of the two-week energy audit conducted at two spinning units selected with the assistance and cooperation of All Pakistan Textile Mill Association (APTMA) at Lahore, the Expert highlighted the main areas of power generation, electrical system and process enhancement. These areas will serve as base line information for evaluating any future performance of energy management. During the energy audit, the Expert also imparted practical training to a team of about twenty technical staff from NPO, SMEDA, GTZ, Local Consultants, technicians of concerned industries and students from Academia. The program was concluded successfully and highly commended by the entrepreneurs the efforts of NPO in energy conservation. At the request of NPO for second TES program, the APO, Japan has appointed the Expert for three weeks from March 15-April 4, 2008 to conduct energy audit and build local capacity in three textile units; two at Lahore and one at Faisalabad. According to benchmark figures, substantial energy saving potential is envisaged in spinning and also in processing sectors. The NPO strongly feels that expanding and replicating the best practices will greatly help industries in attaining energy efficiency, particularly in the textile sector. In addition, the NPO has conducted awareness sessions on Energy Efficiency in QAU,GIKI,FJWU,NTU,TUF & UET(Taxila) as part of developing Industry-Academia Linkage In support of this fundamental notion, the NPO technical team is now prepared to start energy audit in textile sector hopefully from May 2008 and has invited expression of interest thru the APTMA and APTPMA for the selection of industries by completing and returning the questionnaire to the NPO for technical evaluation under pre-determined criteria.
